Health Care

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A. (CDC) estimates there are well over 100,000 deaths annually in the United States alone, as a result of “poor hand sanitation practices.” The causes are medically defined as or “Nosocomial Infections” or "Hospital-Acquired Infections".

In the November 2003 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, Dr. Robert A. Weinstein states, "Hands are the most dangerous thing in the hospital!"

According to the CDC, consumer awareness of this life-threatening problem within hospital environments is very low, even though countless studies have documented that health care nurses and doctors only wash their hands properly, 15% to 30% of the time, while actively working in hospitals and other medical environments.

In a July 18, 2005 article in the Wall Street Journal, “Pennsylvania finds high toll in hospital-acquired infections.” A first-of-its-kind study was performed by a Pennsylvania state agency that found 11,668 hospital-acquired infections associated with 1,793 deaths, 205,000 extra hospital days and $2 billion in additional charges in 2004. These findings came from 173 hospitals across Pennsylvania. The article states “There is no reason to think that Pennsylvania hospitals are any better or worse at controlling infections than other states. Extrapolating from the Pennsylvania data, and relating it to the rest of the United States, suggests that more than 125 people a day are dying across the country, from hospital-acquired infections. On top of that, include an associated $50-billion-plus of related hospital and health care charges -- every year!”

The New England Journal of Medicine has also stated, "Most endemic infections are transmitted by the hands of health workers. Similarly, outbreaks of infection due to transmission of a specific pathogen from patient to patient, or from a contaminated device to a patient, are well documented." The CDC here again confirms that the leading cause of hospital-acquired infections is in fact, “poor hand sanitation practices.”
